AMERICUS —
With Veterans Day coming up on Sunday, there are several area events planned to honor those who served our country and to remember those who didn’t make it back home.
Bobby Salter of Plains Peanuts plans a huge event Saturday on Main Street in Plains. A Classic Car Show starts at 8 a.m.
At 1 p.m. a Veterans Appreciation program begins. Of the five speakers, President Jimmy Carter, himself a veteran, is scheduled to address the crowd.
Other speakers include Herbert Moon (World War II), Marine Maj. Danny Ledford who recently returned from Afghanistan, Thomas Holloway who will speak on local VFWs, and the Poppies program, and State Rep. Mike Cheokas, R-Americus, who will recount his late father, Arthur Cheokas’, military service during World War II.
Salter said music will be provided by Vintage Vocals, a renowned vintage choral group based in the Atlanta area.
Salter said registration for veterans begins at 9 a.m. and each will be presented with a name tag and hat pin representing their branch of service, as well as a flag lapel pin. There will also be food vendors on hand. Car show trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m., he said.
Also at 3 p.m. Saturday, in the theater of the National Prisoner of War Museum at Andersonville National Historic Site, Park volunteer Pat Curry will tell the story of his father’s 33-month imprisonment in North Korea from 1950-1953, and how it affected his family. This program is in addition to regularly scheduled interpretive programs occurring over the Veterans Day weekend.
The annual Tribute to Veterans program is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park on Lake Blackshear. The event is free but parking is $5 per vehicle. Col. Tom Patton, U.S. Marine Corps retired, and Crisp County administrator, is speaker. Also featured are the Mercer University Pipes and Drums, a patriotic flag presentation and the Dooly County High School JROTC color guard. The Ninth Annual Veterans Day Fly-in, with remote-controlled model airplanes, is also held throughout the day.
At 2 p.m. on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, a special program will also be held at the Illinois Monument in the Andersonville National Cemetery.
Southland Academy invites all local and area veterans to a special program at 9 a.m. Friday in the Melvin Kinslow gym in recognition of veterans. Hubert Greene of Americus, a World War II veteran, will tell his story.
