JSL announces honoraries, provisional members
AMERICUS — The Americus Junior Service League recently announced its elected honoraries and provisional members.
Elected honoraries:
Carlene Peace is a retired banker with many years of professional banking experience. She served as interim city president, financial specialist with Wachovia, before becoming private banker-vice president for Sumter Bank and Trust. She is married to James Peace Jr. and has three children. She has served in various community service areas such as president of the United Way and the American Heart Association of Sumter County. She is a Kiwanis member and a graduate of Leadership Sumter. She enjoys spending her spare time traveling, reading, exercising and volunteering.
Elise Miller is a private tutor and contractor for the ACT. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia, where she obtained a degree in comparative literature. She is married to Boyce E. “Stick” Miller III, and they have three children. She is the current chair of the Americus Theater and Cultural Authority, as well as an active member of the GSW Foundation, the Sumter Historic Trust and the Four Seasons Garden Club. She is very involved at Calvary Episcopal Church, where she serves on the vestry, the flower committee and is a lay reader. She likes to play bridge and tennis, walk and read in her free time.
Provisionals are:
Linda Goodin is an employee of Citizens Bank of Americus. She is married to Mark Goodin and has a son, Mitchell, age 11. She enjoys helping others, spending time with friends and being active in her son’s sports. She is a graduate of Southland Academy and attends church at First United Methodist.
Barbara Grodan works in community and economic development through the Archway Project. She holds numerous degrees in economics as well as a master’s of public administration from the University of Georgia. Grogan is very involved in the community, serving as a member of the Sumter Historic Trust as well as the Americus Rotary Club. She volunteers her time with the City of Americus and Sumter County Board of Commissioners’ events. She enjoys reading, SEC football, cooking, sewing and preserving foods in her spare time.
Ashley Hamilton is a special education teacher for the Sumter County School system. She is a graduate of Northside High School, Warner Robins, and Georgia Southwestern State University, where she received her master’s of education. She is very involved in First Presbyterian Church, where she serves as a member of the education and pastoral nominating committees for the district presbytery. She is also the secretary for the Presbyterian Student Center Board at GSW. She enjoys painting, reading, writing, singing and volunteering with youth.
Mary Ann Hammack is the wife of Nathan Hammack, a teacher and coach at Southland Academy. She is a graduate of Southland Academy and Georgia Southwestern University with a degree in early childhood education. She currently uses her degree as a first-grade teacher at Cherokee Elementary. She is chairman of her school’s Relay for Life team and attends First Baptist Church. She enjoys traveling and scrapbooking.
Laura Joyner the wife of Dr. Jeremy Joyner, a physician at Phoebe Sumter Medica, Center. She is a graduate of Southland Academy. She is currently a stay at home mom caring for her three children, Tyler, Cayce and Anna Kate. When not involved with her children, she enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends. She is actively involved in Central Baptist Church’s children’s ministry, as well as the Town and Country Garden Club.
Victoria Kelley is married to Travis Kelley and is the proud mother of one-month-old Max. She is employed as a teacher in the Sumter County School system. She is a graduate of Southland Academy and Georgia Southwestern State University, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. She is active with the Relay for Life campaign and is a Sunday School and youth director at Plains United Methodist Church.
Heather Lafevers is the director of Habitat for Humanity’s Restore. She graduated from South Gwinnett High School and Georgia Southern University with a degree in public relations. She is married to Jonathan LeFevers, and serves as a board member for the Sumter Historic Trust. She enjoys cooking, shopping, sports, gardening and renovating.
Mandy Latta is a graduate of Southland Academy and Georgia Southern University, where she obtained a degree in marketing. She is currently a stay at home mom caring for her young daughter, Sarah Shea. She is the wife of Matt Latta, a medical salesman. She enjoys traveling, skiing, boating, scuba diving and shopping in her free time.
Carrie Peace is an insurance agent with the Baldwin Agency. She is a graduate of Sumter County High as well as TESST in Baltimore, Md. She is married to Tre’ Pearce and they have a five-year-old daughter, Halley Rae. She is a Relay for Life team member as well as a member of Riverview Baptist Church. She enjoys doing crafts and spending time with family and friends.
Whitney Raburn is a graduate of Southland Academy and the University of Georgia with a bachelor of business administration in business/risk management. She currently works as a benefits operation manager. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, football and traveling.
Lindsey Roberts is a graduate of Southland Academy. She also holds a bachelor of science in psychology from Georgia Southwestern State University. She is married to Jeromy Roberts and they are members at Central Baptist Church. She spends her spare time reading, shopping and traveling.
Julie Stubbs is a middle school teacher in Lee County. She holds several educational degrees with the most current being an educational specialist from Georgia Southwestern State University. She is currently engaged and planning a June wedding to Gordy Bonner. She participates in health and fitness activities and volunteers her time with Madeline’s Mission.
Andrea Walker is director of donor communications for Magnolia Manor. She is a graduate of Georgia Southern University where she majored in business finance and hotel and restaurant management. She is married to Adam Walker and they are active members of Central Baptist Church. She loves cooking and long walks, as well as spending time with family and friends.
Jessica Wiggins is a buyer and salesperson at the Kinnebrew Co. She attended Southland Academy and graduated from South Georgia Technical College with an associate’s degree in marketing. She enjoys running and doing outdoor activities, and has participated in the breast cancer walk.

Sumter YDC to hold graduation
Sumter Youth Development Campus to hold graduation: One student at the Sumter Youth Development Campus (YDC) will receive his high school diploma, 11 will graduate with their equivalency degrees (GEDs) and two students will receive technical certificates from South Georgia Technical College at a graduation ceremony at 10 a.m. today at the YDC facility.

BOC to hold special called meeting today
The Sumter County Board of Commissioners has a special called meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Board of Commissioners’ Board Room to discuss the approval of any contracts with any municipalities that have elected to contract with the Sumter County Board of Commissioners for providing fire and emergency services.
