AMERICUS — The Sumter County Board of Education accepted the resignation of the Americus-Sumter County High School South Campus principal on Thursday. The system will hire a long-term substitute in Principal Ronald Gadson’s place until they find a permanent principal. The Board voted seven in favor, with one abstention.
Board members and Sumter County’s administration haven’t released why Gadson submitted his resignation, but a small group of students protested the ousting of their principal early Tuesday morning at Americus-Sumter County High School’s South Campus at 805 Harrold Ave. Valerie Roberts, assistant superintendent for personnel and student activities for Sumter County Schools, confirmed that 18 to 20 students protested, carrying small signs, outside the school for about five minutes. Superintendent Dennis McMahon told the Times-Recorder earlier this week that Gadson had not been recommended for rehiring.
Gadson served as principal of the Americus-Sumter County Freshman Academy on the North Campus for two years prior to going to the South Campus, where he has been principal for the past two years.
In other news, Sumter County Board of Education members will apply for a tax anticipation note (TAN) at 2.49 percent, but they’ll meet every time they need to use it — if and when they do — before taking any money out of the note. The Board approved it 7-1 Thursday at their March meeting.
Also, the Board shot down a proposal to admit cargo pants into their schools’ dress code. There had been some uproar from elementary school children’s parents asking to allow their children to wear the pants because it’s difficult to find any other kind for their children.
Board members Doug Goodin and Michael Mock voted to approve the pants.
“Kids’ll find a way to bring something in if they want to, anyway, no matter what they’re wearing,” Mock said.
But, Goodin and Mock were the only ones who voted for it — five others voted no.
