AMERICUS —
The Americus Times-Recorder lost a long-time columnist for its religious page earlier this week.
The Rev. Dr. W. Aubrey Alsobrook died Tuesday at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center after a brief illness. He was two days short of his 98th birthday.
Funeral services are planned for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church of Americus with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:15 p.m. in the Church Parlor prior to the service. Interment will be held privately at the Americus Oak Grove Cemetery.
A native of Woodland, Alsobrook earned two undergraduate degrees in philosophy and divinity from Emory University and Candler School of Theology in Atlanta and his doctorate in philosophy from Drew University in New Jersey.
He served the South Georgia Annual Conference of The Methodist Church for 40 years in churches throughout South Georgia and New Jersey, as pastor and District superintendent. Retiring in 1980 from active service, he continued to serve as a retired supply pastor for five years and subsequently, as pastor emeritus for seven years at the First United Methodist Church of Jesup.
He moved to Magnolia Manor in 1992, where he continued his ministry throughout the Magnolia Manor Retirement Center, the community, the county and South Georgia. He wrote the Adult Sunday School lessons for 25 years for The Wesleyan Christian Advocate, the Georgia Methodist newspaper. He had been guest columnist for the Americus Times-Recorder since 1993. Among his many publications, his most recent books include “Praying With The Word, A Religious Columnist Speaks” and “Life With God.”
He is survived by a daughter, daughter-in-law, stepson and stepdaughter, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Hancock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The Home Run to be held in Jay Williams’ memory
Jay Williams, of Plains, was an outdoor type of guy, enjoying activities such as running and bicycling. He was also a spiritual man and enjoyed sharing his faith with others. When he died after a falling accident in June 2012, his friends really missed him. Two of those friends, Travis Kelly and Rebecca Ferguson, decided to carry out a race event that Williams had planned, to benefit the Methodist Youth Home in Americus.
