St. Simons —
South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Vice President for Institutional Advancement Su Ann Bird was elected to serve as secretary of the Georgia Education Advancement Council (GEAC) State Board at the group’s annual conference held recently at the King and Prince at St. Simons.
The Georgia Education Advancement Council (GEAC) was organized in 1974 to “foster greater professional advancement for Georgia college and university personnel.” The 2012 annual conference included over 200 marketing and advancement individuals from the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia.
Rick Woodall, director, Campaign Promotions and Advancement Communications from Berry College, was elected president of the group. Bird of SGTC was elected Secretary and Sue Chipman from Macon State College was re-elected as treasurer. Jeff Boggan from North Georgia College and State University is the immediate past president of the organization.
Retiring University of Georgia President Michael Adams was recognized at the annual conference with the GEAC Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding fundraising efforts as President of the University of Georgia. Adams thanked the group for this honor and expressed his appreciation to each of the professionals gathered at the conference for their contribution to higher education.
The College of Coastal Georgia was recognized for its college-wide advancement efforts and West Georgia College was singled out for its overall effective marketing campaign titled “Go West.” Dawn Cook of West Georgia Technical College was spotlighted for her college’s advancement efforts as well.
A number of workshops for advancement officers, alumni directors and marketing individuals were held including sessions on: Completing the Voluntary Support of Education Survey and Benchmarking Results, College Branding, Higher Education Branding Success Stories, Bridging Bridges for a Stronger Alumni Relations Department, Crisis Communications, Building a Development Shop, Social Media Marketing, and Fundraising Challenges and Opportunities for Private and Public Colleges and Universities.

The Home Run to be held in Jay Williams’ memory
Jay Williams, of Plains, was an outdoor type of guy, enjoying activities such as running and bicycling. He was also a spiritual man and enjoyed sharing his faith with others. When he died after a falling accident in June 2012, his friends really missed him. Two of those friends, Travis Kelly and Rebecca Ferguson, decided to carry out a race event that Williams had planned, to benefit the Methodist Youth Home in Americus.

Ru Story-Huffman named dean of GSW’s James Earl Carter Library
Ru Story-Huffman, interim dean of the James Earl Carter Library at Georgia Southwestern State University, was officially named dean. Prior to her role as interim dean, Story-Huffman served as reference librarian and government information coordinator at the Carter Library. She succeeds Vera Weisskopf who retired in March 2012.
