Atlanta —
A grocery store cashier has checked out a colossal prize from the Georgia Lottery. Shaquita Mitchell of Americus has won a $3 million top prize playing the instant game Millionaire Jingle Jumbo Bucks.
Mitchell, 33, claimed her prize Monday at the Georgia Lottery’s District Office in Columbus.
Danfair Express No. 0003, located at 402 W. Forsyth St. in Americus, sold the winning ticket.
“I went in to get gas, and I purchased the ticket,” Mitchell said. “I scratched it when I went back to my car. I couldn’t believe it.”
In disbelief, the lucky winner shared the good news with the store’s clerk.
“I said, ‘This can’t be true,’ ” she recalled. “The clerk said, ‘Yes! You have won $3 million.’”
Excited over her windfall, Mitchell has yet to decide how she’ll use her winnings.
Danfair Express also sold a $1 million top prize from the instant game Georgia Millions last August.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $14 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
