AMERICUS — This weekend will be a busy one for the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department (SCPRD). The Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) Basketball district championships started Thursday night, with the 10 and under boys MITE league games that featured Tift County squaring off against Mitchell County and Thomasville YMCA facing Crisp County.
The championships will continue on Saturday with the winners of the first games taking on Lee County and the host Sumter County at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. respectively. Also, in action tonight at the Columns at Boone Park the Sumter County eight and under Flea boys will be taking on Lee County at 6 p.m. with the winner going on to face the winner of the 7:30 game between Crisp County and Mitchell County.
“We are very excited to be able to host our first district tournament at the Columns at Boone Park,” said Darius Harris, athletic manager for SCPRD. “We expect all of our teams to fair well in the tournament, and we are really looking for people to come out and support our teams.”
The 12 and under midget team from SCPRD, the district defending champions, will also be in competition this weekend, as they defend their title in Tifton.
