Schley County High School Opening News 2011-2012

ELLAVILLE — Schley County High School will open its doors for its 12th year of operation on Aug. 5. Students will report on this day. The faculty will begin preplanning on Aug. 1.  Parents, students, faculty, staff, supporters and the Wildcat community may get all information needed concerning Schley County Middle/High School at the new website – www.schs.schleyk12.org

The building will house students in grades 6-12. The school day for the 2011-2012 school year for all students in grades 6-12 will be 8 a.m.-3:21 p.m. There will be homerooms (8-8:10) and all students (grades 6-12) are to report to their assigned homeroom by 8 a.m.

The curriculum in grades 6-8 will continue with instruction in reading, math, science, English, social studies, music, physical education, technology and CRCT Prep Period.

The middle school will continue to offer a varied sports program to include competition with other middle schools in football, basketball, baseball, softball, cheerleading and track. The high school will offer these same sports plus golf, competition cheerleading and cross-country. Schedules have been set in the sports of football, softball, cheerleading and basketball for the 2011-2012 school year. Anyone interested in participating in extra curricular athletic teams must have a valid physical, proof of insurance and permission form completed and on file.                                                         

The school day high school students at Schley County High School will see a slight change as classes as each class will be a 53-minute “traditional” class. High school students have a varied curriculum to include college preparatory, career, technical and agricultural studies. A.P. Senior English, A.P. Literature/Composition, A.P. Calculus, A.P. U.S. History and A.P. Biology will again be offered in the curriculum. Career, technical and agricultural studies (CTAE) will include business, family/consumer science, technology, and agriculture pathways leading toward certification. Pathways offered at Schley County High School include “Plants and Horticulture,” “Nutrition and Food Science,” “Financial Management Accounting,” and “Interactive Media.” Three courses in the same pathway are needed to meet this requirement for those students interested in pursuing one of these pathways. CTAE Pathway Exams which lead to national certification will be offered to students who complete a pathway. College credit courses will be made available in conjunction with South Georgia Technical College and Georgia Southwestern State University for juniors and seniors who meet post-secondary options requirements.  Youth apprentice and teacher apprentice programs of study are also again available for interested students.  

Students graduating in 2012 must have attained 26 units to include all required courses and have fulfilled all other State BOE graduation requirements to receive a diploma. Additionally, students will be taking state required end-of-course (EOCT) examinations in the core academic areas of English, math, science and social studies. These scores will be posted to the student transcripts. Students and parents are reminded that the EOCT will be the final exam in all courses assessed by the EOCT and will count the State BOE assigned percentage of the student’s final grade in the course.  

Academic core courses will include instruction in English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language (Spanish and French). Fine arts courses will include band, drawing, graphic arts and drama.

Open house for grades 6-12 will be from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 4. Orientation for all students in grades 6, 7 and 8 and their parents is designed to give important information concerning policies, procedures, testing and supplies requirements.  

Orientation sessions are scheduled as follows:  6th grade – 5:15 p.m.; 7th grade – 6 p.m. and 8th grade – 6:30 p.m.

Seniors may pick up schedules, rent lockers and purchase parking permits from 2-3 p.m. Aug. 3. Students in grades 9-11 may pick up schedules, rent lockers and purchase parking permits from 2-3 p.m. Aug. 4. Students who are unable to complete these tasks during assigned dates and times may do so during open house or the first day of school.

Middle school students will receive their class schedules at open house from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 4 or on the first day of school. Homeroom teachers will be in charge of locker rental for 7th and 8th grade students during open house or the first day of school.  6th grade students may pay for and select their lockers the night of open house from their homeroom teacher and will receive their combination and lock training on the first day of school.

High school homeroom teachers will be issued a numbered sequence of lockers. Students may select their locker within this sequence from their homeroom teacher. The yearly rental fee on lockers will be $5. No locker rentals will be allowed before the time frame scheduled.

There will be a slight increase in the student parking fee for the 2011-2012 school year. The cost of a parking permit will be $15. Parking permits purchased after the 1st semester break will be $10. Forty-two spaces on the front row are reserved for seniors. In order to purchase a parking decal, the student must present his/her driver’s license, insurance card, automobile model, make and tag number at the time of the purchase. Parking permits must be purchased before homeroom or between classes.

Homeroom will begin promptly at 8 a.m. each and every day of school for all students in grades 6-12.  Breakfast for all students (Grades 6-12) will be served from 7:30-7:55 each day. All students in grades 6-12 (bus rider or car rider) must make plans for the breakfast time if they plan to eat breakfast at school.

The following is the dress code for all students at Schley County High School for grades 6-12.

Dress/Attire

Students will be clean, neat and dressed in a manner conducive to academic achievement. Each classroom teacher is best suited to determine what is distracting to his/her students over and above the guidelines below. The administration reserves the right to decide the suitability of any and all garments. The following guidelines will be employed, though they are not all inclusive:

No clothes, which advertise drugs, tobacco, alcohol, or contain vulgar, distasteful or suggestive comments shall be allowed.

No sunglasses in the building.

No hats will be worn in the building at Schley County High School. Students should leave hats in their vehicles or at home.

No tank tops, spaghetti straps, fishnet shirts or clothes with inappropriate slits or holes are to be worn to school.

No sagging — pants or shorts may not be worn below the waistline.

No spandex shorts, pajama/lounge pants, leggings (unless worn with skirt or dress that meets dress code) or athletic shorts (like Umbros, or Nike) are to be worn.

No dress or skirts are to be worn which are more than three inches above the back crease of the knee. Shorts must be hemmed and may not be more than three inches above the back crease of the knee.

No transparent wind pants are to be worn. (Non-transparent are acceptable).

No bedroom type slippers or heelies (shoes with wheels) are to be worn. Shoes are required by law.

No halter-tops, bare midriffs (skin visible at waist), low necklines or clothing of a revealing nature are to be worn.

No rings, bobs or studs on any body part except the ear (no tongue, lip, nose, navel, eye brow rings. etc. no expections)

No curlers, combs, head rags, etc, are to be worn in the hair or on the head.

No clothing, hairstyle (such as Mohawk), or other, which causes a distraction or disruption of the learning environment, will be tolerated. Any other clothing or hair style, which is deemed by the administration to cause a disruption or distraction to the learning environment or school atmosphere, is not permitted.

No trench coats are to be worn.

No bandanas, handkerchiefs or shoestrings may hang from pockets.

No undergarments should be visible.

No plain undershirts are to be worn as one’s shirt.

No gloves are to be worn.

No chains are to be worn or possessed which might pose a danger.

No shirt tails out below the natural waistline.

No shirts or jackets with slits or holes for fingers to depict gloves are to be worn.

All belts must be worn through belt loops in pants and as designed to be worn.

Shirttails must be tucked inside of pants if they extend below the natural waistline.

No bookbags of any kind are allowed in grades 6-12. P.E. or athletic bags must be taken directly to the office, couch or homeroom teacher  immediately upon arrival at school.

The faculty parking lot is located between the high school and elementary buildings while the student parking lot is on the opposite end of the high school building. Visitor parking and parent pick up and drop off will be located in the front of the building. The drive-through is to be used for parent pick up and drop off only. No pick up or drop off of students allowed in  the faculty or student parking lots.
