AMERICUS —
Get ready for two fun-filled days in Plains this weekend at the fifth annual Plains Pig Pickin’ barbecue cook-off. Kicking off with a street dance scheduled from 8-11:30 p.m. Friday on Main Street, the event promises to be a good time for the whole family.
Main Street will be closed Friday evening for the street dance as visitors and locals enjoy music from Jimmy Gaddy of Lumpkin.
More than 20 cooking teams will be arriving Friday evening and setting up their grills and smokers to cook throughout the night for the Georgia Barbecue Association-sanctioned competition.
According to Ruth Sanders, Plains Better Hometown coordinator, those attending the event will be pleased to hear that several teams will have barbecue available to sample. She said attendees can pay $5 and be able sample offerings from participating teams and will be able to cast a vote for their favorite. There will be four categories that judges will pick best-in-class for, which include pork loin, ribs, sauce and butts or shoulders.
Saturday’s events are scheduled from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and will feature food vendors, arts and craft vendors, children’s games and SAM Shortline rides. President Jimmy Carter presents the cook-off awards at 4 p.m. For more information call 824-5373.
