AMERICUS —
Sumter County Board of Commissioner Randy Howard honored several County employees, who are retiring as well as outgoing Commissioner Rick Davis and outgoing Senator, George Hooks, D-Americus. The proclamations were given at the start of Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Sumter County Board of Commissioners.
Howard said Tuesday that Hooks, during his tenure as a State Representative and Senator, advocated for Sumter County and the community had prospered in many ways due to his work at the State Capitol. “Senator Hooks has earned my trust and the trust of this community as a whole, and anything he says, he’s going to do...that goes a long way with me and others in our community. Senator Hooks, thank you for what you have done for us through the years,” said Howard.
Following the proclamations the Board proceed with the meeting, first unanimously approving the consent agenda that included the following items.
• Approval of the request to fill a vacant full time position of Tag
and Tax Clerk I in the tax commissioner’s office. The beginning pay grade for this position is $19,930.91.
• Approval of the request to fill a vacant part time position of Tag
and Tax Clerk in the tax commissioner’s office. The beginning pay grade for this position is $10.07 per hour.
• Approval of resolution for the Sumter County Tax Assessors Board (Tab 16)
• Reappointment of Betty Todd and Bill Bowen to the Railroad Excursion Train Authority
• Reappointment of David Jennings to the Sumter County Board of Tax Assessors.
• Approval of the process to submit legislation for the Board of Elections Supervisor to be supervised by the Sumter County Board of Commissioners.
The following were also anonymously approved as separate items:
• Approval of renewal alcoholic beverage license for William Norwood Clark – owner; Brickyard Plantation: Golf Club and RV Campground – 1619 U.S. Highway 280 East
• Approval of renewal alcoholic beverage license for Charlie M. Barnes, owner; Spring Creek Marina, 3077 Lamar Road— Beer on premises — Wine on premises.
• Approval of renewal alcoholic beverage license for James Miles, Jr. ,owner; Astro Club Inc. DBA Astro’s ,153 Sunset Park Rd. — Beer on premises — Wine on premises — mixed drinks on premises.
• Approval of renewal alcoholic beverage license for John King, Jr., owner; CB Dowdell American Legion Post 558, 116 Georgia Highway 30 W. — Beer on premises — Wine on premises — mixed drinks on premises.
• Approval of renewal alcoholic beverage license for Gene Mattson, owner; Plains MTD Mart, 114 Highway 45 North — Beer off Premises
• 6. Approval of renewal alcoholic beverage license for Virgil F. Goodin, Jr., owner; One Dawg DBA: Fatboys, 4038 U.S. Highway 280, — Beer off Premises
• Approval of renewal alcoholic beverage license for William Stephen Perry, Jr., owner; Perry Brothers Oil co. DBA Get N Go, 506 Highway 280 East — Beer off premises — Wine off premises
XIII. Discussion of County Property
• Approval of amendment to tax refund guidelines.
• Approval of intergovernmental agreement between the Board of Commissioners of Sumter county and the City of Americus, to provide for reciprocal mutual aid and services. The BOC is requesting that the City and County waive the current fee agreement of mutual aid.
• Approval of a 90 day agreement between the Board of Commissioners of Sumter County Georgia and the City of Americus to provide for jail services in which the City continues to impose and to transmit the 10 percent surcharge. The per diem goes to $45. The City is to reimburse the County on or before the 10th of the month.

The Home Run to be held in Jay Williams’ memory
Jay Williams, of Plains, was an outdoor type of guy, enjoying activities such as running and bicycling. He was also a spiritual man and enjoyed sharing his faith with others. When he died after a falling accident in June 2012, his friends really missed him. Two of those friends, Travis Kelly and Rebecca Ferguson, decided to carry out a race event that Williams had planned, to benefit the Methodist Youth Home in Americus.
