Georgia Power contributes $5,000 to SGTC electrical lineworker program

AMERICUS — Jim Holt, principle consultant for Georgia Power Workforce Development, presented the South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Foundation with a $5,000 check from Georgia Power recently to be utilized by the SGTC electrical lineworker program.

Sparky Reeves, president of SGTC, accepted the donation on behalf of the Foundation. SGTC Vice President of Economic Development Wally Summers and Larry Trussell, SGTC electrical lineworker instructor and Economic Development specialist, were also on hand for the donation.

“We appreciate the support that Georgia Power has shown South Georgia Technical College, and this donation is just one of the many ways in which Georgia Power and South Georgia Technical College have worked together to provide individuals, businesses and industries in our six county service area as well as throughout Georgia, with excellent educational and career opportunities,” said Reeves as he accepted the donation.

SGTC created a seven-week electrical lineworker apprentice training program as an immediate response to the electrical industry’s demands in 2005, and has graduated hundreds of students from the program who have entered the power industry as electrical lineworker apprentices.

“This program is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in gaining employment with a regional or city/county utility company,” said Wally Summers. “We worked with six different electric companies or cooperatives as well as six different cities to make sure that we offered the training that would be beneficial to potential employers. Students who complete this seven-week course are eligible for an entry-level apprentice position with the opportunity for advancement.”

South Georgia Technical College will be offering the next electrical lineworker class beginning in January. For more information about the program or to apply for entry, contact Wally Summers or Tami Blount at 229-931-2040.

Students must be 18 years of age or old by program graduation date, have a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license as well as the enrollment requirements for SGTC.
