WALB’s Karla Heath-Sands to keynote Convocation at GSW
Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) hosts its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation at 11 a.m. Jan. 16 in Convocation Hall of the Student Success Center. Karla Heath-Sands of WALB-TV in Albany is the keynote speaker.
Originally from Brunswick, Heath-Sands started her career in 1989, at WMAZ-TV in Macon as a weathercaster and community service director. She came to WALB in 1997, and anchors Newscenter 10’s noon news and co-hosts “Today in Georgia.” She also hosts WALB's public affairs program, “Dialogue.”
The Mercer University graduate has a bachelor of arts degree in English and has been at home on stage for most of her life. She has been a participant in the Miss America Pageant system placing fourth runner-up in the 1982 Miss Georgia Pageant as Miss Macon. She placed second in 1985 as Miss Brunswick-Golden Isles.
Local ministers, community leaders and high school and middle school students from the Americus area will be in attendance. The event is sponsored by the MLK Convocation Committee, SABU alumni and friends and the Americus-Sumter County Movement Remembered Committee.
