The 30th annual meeting of the Association of Third World Studies (ATWS) Inc., was held at Berry College in Rome last fall, featuring over 100 attendees from around the globe. During the event 35 panels and round table discussions were organized all focusing on the theme, “Winds of Change: Crisis and Critique in the Third World.”
The conference was co-sponsored by ATWS, Berry College, and Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW). ATWS was founded in 1983, by Harold Isaacs, Ph.D., professor emeritus of history at Georgia Southwestern.
Two GSW faculty members and one student participated in the conference. Philip Szmedra, Ph.D., professor of economics, and Li Zhenzhong, an international student from China, presented a paper titled “The Effects of Implementing a Healthy Cities Plan in China: Prevention and Control of Diabetes in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, PRC.” Isaacs chaired a panel on Globalization.
The keynote address, “United States Foreign Policy and Global Health Diplomacy: History and Prospects for Action in the Third World,” was presented by David Bruce Conn, Ph.D., dean of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Berry.
A number of awards were presented to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the academic discipline of third world studies.
“We have come a long way over the past 30 years from the two panels we had at our first annual meeting at GSW in 1983,” Isaacs said. “I am very proud that our organization has a large and active global membership, consultative status in the United Nations, and a publication, Journal of Third World Studies, that has a worldwide circulation.”

Thirteen graduate from SGTC Law Enforcement Academy
South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) Law Enforcement Academy (LEA) recently held a graduation ceremony for its most recent graduates in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on SGTC’s Americus campus. Thirteen individuals were recognized and received their Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification.

High school team heading to World Finals
This school year marked the first time that the Sumter County School System has produced an Odyssey of the Mind team in the high school-age category, and the team will travel May 22-25 to East Lansing, Mich., to compete in the World Finals competition. The team, from Americus-Sumter County High School (ASHS) North Campus is made up of ninth-graders Sarah Dye, Thomas Edge, Jacob Pritchard, Morgan Cloutier, Logan Bennett and Elliot Bennett.
