At Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, it continues to be all about the heart as more activities and events are announced in recognition of February being National Heart Awareness Month.
Phoebe Sumter joined thousands of individuals and organizations across the country on Feb. 1 by wearing red for Go Red for Women Day, which brought awareness to the fact that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States.
Next up, Phoebe Sumter will conduct free blood pressure screenings from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today, Valentine’s Day at Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie.
On Saturday, the Phoebe Sumter All-Stars will take on the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office in the second annual Healthy Heart Basketball Game. The game will take place at Americus Sumter High School South Campus Gymnasium. Game time is at 6 p.m., and all proceeds benefit local heart patients.
Finally, on Sunday, Feb. 24, Phoebe Sumter is asking all local churches to wear red in recognition of Heart Awareness Month.
“Heart disease doesn’t get the same attention at times as cancer and other diseases, so we just want to make sure we bring awareness to it and ways to take care of your heart,” said Marcus Johnson, marketing & PR director at Phoebe Sumter. “Heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined, and we know that there are things you can do to protect your heart and have overall better heart health. This entire month is about bringing these things into focus and thereby making our community healthier.”

Ru Story-Huffman named dean of GSW’s James Earl Carter Library
Ru Story-Huffman, interim dean of the James Earl Carter Library at Georgia Southwestern State University, was officially named dean. Prior to her role as interim dean, Story-Huffman served as reference librarian and government information coordinator at the Carter Library. She succeeds Vera Weisskopf who retired in March 2012.

Thirteen graduate from SGTC Law Enforcement Academy
South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) Law Enforcement Academy (LEA) recently held a graduation ceremony for its most recent graduates in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on SGTC’s Americus campus. Thirteen individuals were recognized and received their Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification.

Schley County High School senior class valedictorian Ali Anderson and salutatorian Geena Hollis were honored at the April meeting of the Schley County Family Connection Collaborative.

High school team heading to World Finals
This school year marked the first time that the Sumter County School System has produced an Odyssey of the Mind team in the high school-age category, and the team will travel May 22-25 to East Lansing, Mich., to compete in the World Finals competition. The team, from Americus-Sumter County High School (ASHS) North Campus is made up of ninth-graders Sarah Dye, Thomas Edge, Jacob Pritchard, Morgan Cloutier, Logan Bennett and Elliot Bennett.
