Ga. House Speaker to visit GSW Sept. 29
Georgia House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) is the featured speaker at a Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) convocation at 11 a.m. Sept. 29. Set in Jackson Performance Hall, the convocation is free and open to the public.

Language not a barrier for friendship
The students from Konu, Japan, and adult chaperons from Miyoshi City and Konu arrived in Plains Aug. 19 for their annual friendship exchange. With a shorter trip to the area, Sumter County Schools decided to have the welcome ceremony in Plains so the delegation could visit Plains and the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm.

Bottled water provides cool for bus riders
The after-school concern for students riding home on Sumter County Schools' buses was increased on Aug. 4 as school-dismissal temperatures hovered at 100 degrees. With five air conditioned buses in the transportation fleet of the school district, all possible measures were planned to best hydrate and ease the ride home for students.
