PRESTON —
Sydney Morgan Scott, the daughter of Michael and Katha Scott of Preston, has been named Webster County High School’s STAR Student for the 2012-2013 school year. STAR student recognition is awarded to the senior who has the highest score on a single test date on the three-part SAT. The selected student must also be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of the senior class based on grade point average.
Scott has been named to the Principals’ Honor roll (all A’s) for grades 9-12. She has proven to be an academic leader and also serves as senior class president. Her outstanding classroom performance has earned her membership into the Senior Beta Club. She is a member of Spanish Club, Quiz Bowl Team and Math Team. She enjoys reading and listening to music. After high school, she plans to attend Columbus State University in Columbus, where she will major in communications.
Each STAR student designates a STAR teacher, the classroom teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s achievement. Scott named Teresa Banks, who teaches grades six-eight reading at Webster County Elementary/Middle School.
Banks commented, “Sydney was and still remains a creative and driven young lady determined to make the most of her education.”
Scott stated, “Mrs. Banks’ class was the highlight of my day in middle school.”
She also said that Banks instilled a love of reading in her that has carried her through her high school career.
The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, now in its 55th year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education. Since its inception, the STAR program has honored more than 23,500 students and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic success.

Ru Story-Huffman named dean of GSW’s James Earl Carter Library
Ru Story-Huffman, interim dean of the James Earl Carter Library at Georgia Southwestern State University, was officially named dean. Prior to her role as interim dean, Story-Huffman served as reference librarian and government information coordinator at the Carter Library. She succeeds Vera Weisskopf who retired in March 2012.

Thirteen graduate from SGTC Law Enforcement Academy
South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) Law Enforcement Academy (LEA) recently held a graduation ceremony for its most recent graduates in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on SGTC’s Americus campus. Thirteen individuals were recognized and received their Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification.

High school team heading to World Finals
This school year marked the first time that the Sumter County School System has produced an Odyssey of the Mind team in the high school-age category, and the team will travel May 22-25 to East Lansing, Mich., to compete in the World Finals competition. The team, from Americus-Sumter County High School (ASHS) North Campus is made up of ninth-graders Sarah Dye, Thomas Edge, Jacob Pritchard, Morgan Cloutier, Logan Bennett and Elliot Bennett.
