AMERICUS —
The Technology Lab at Sumter County Elementary School is opening a virtual door to the world. Third-grade students are experiencing a field trip like no other, without stepping foot out of school — 24 stops around the world in only 45 minutes! From Athens, Greece, to Boston, Mass., students get to visit each location through Google Earth. Google Earth allows students to travel the world through a virtual globe and view satellite images, maps and terrain. Instead of just seeing photos and locating places on a flat map, they get to see realistic, 3-D views of the United States mountain ranges and rivers they are learning about in their homeroom classes. Using Google Earth, students are able to learn about a place’s geographic features, dive into the Atlantic Ocean to explore underwater canyons and caves, and explore the sky. Each stop of their journey is related to standards being taught in the classroom.
