Orlando, Fla. —
South Georgia Technical College Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs Deborah Jones and Mary Clare DiGiacomo, director of Online Learning at Athens Technical College made a presentation at the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC) 2011 annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., recently.
The presentation was titled, “Meet the Standards! Create a Faculty Development Plan to Ensure a Quality Distance Education Program.” The session focused on essential components for faculty development programs for distance education and was held in front of a standing room only group from SACS-COC institutions.
The SGTC and Athens Technical College Distance Education professionals also discussed a framework for implementing quality programs for distance education as well as a framework to help colleges meet SACS-COC accreditation standards for distance education programs. They presented models of faculty development programs including suggested professional development offerings, physical and virtual spaces, personnel needs, and hardware and software resources.
The session was designed to guide participants in the development of a faculty development program model to take back to their home institutions. It was intended for academic technology leaders, distance education directors, administrators and professional development directors.
SACS-COC is the recognized regional accrediting body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the southern states. It serves as the common denominator of shared values and practices among the diverse institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Latin America and other international sites approved by the Commission on Colleges that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degrees.
The agency examines college operations and makes recommendations on how to improve the effectiveness of the institution by ensuring that the college meets standards established by the higher education community that address the needs of society and students.
SGTCand Athens Technical College are both accredited by SACS-COC and both were recently selected as finalists for the Technical College System of Georgia’s prestigious 2011 College of the Year award.
