AMERICUS —
Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet Seaborn Jones will lead a special convocation at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Jackson Performance Hall at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW).
The event is free and open to the public.
Jones’ Pulitzer-nominated work, “Going Farther into the Woods than the Woods Go,” was published in 2012, by Mercer University Press. In addition, Jones has been published in the “New York Quarterly,” “Southern Poetry Review,” “River Styx,” “Chattahoochee Review,” “Poetry New Zealand,” “Wilshire Review,” and numerous other journals including translations of his work for European publications.
His poems have been anthologized in “80 on the 80s,” “Scorched Hands," “National Poetry Contest Winners, 1993,” and in “Java Monkey Speaks Anthology #3” (2008).
Jones has received three International Merit Awards from “Atlanta Review.” The author of six books including his Pulitzer-nominated work, Jones’ title, “X-Ray Movies,” received the Georgia Author of the Year Award in Poetry (1998). He has been the recipient of the Violet Reed Haas Poetry Prize and was selected as the 1991 Alan Collins Scholar in Poetry at the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference.
A native of Macon, Jones continues to speak and read extensively throughout the United States.
A book signing with Jones will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Java City within the Marshall Student Center. Copies of “Going Farther into the Woods than the Woods Go” are on order now at the GSW Bookstore.

Ru Story-Huffman named dean of GSW’s James Earl Carter Library
Ru Story-Huffman, interim dean of the James Earl Carter Library at Georgia Southwestern State University, was officially named dean. Prior to her role as interim dean, Story-Huffman served as reference librarian and government information coordinator at the Carter Library. She succeeds Vera Weisskopf who retired in March 2012.

Thirteen graduate from SGTC Law Enforcement Academy
South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) Law Enforcement Academy (LEA) recently held a graduation ceremony for its most recent graduates in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on SGTC’s Americus campus. Thirteen individuals were recognized and received their Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification.

High school team heading to World Finals
This school year marked the first time that the Sumter County School System has produced an Odyssey of the Mind team in the high school-age category, and the team will travel May 22-25 to East Lansing, Mich., to compete in the World Finals competition. The team, from Americus-Sumter County High School (ASHS) North Campus is made up of ninth-graders Sarah Dye, Thomas Edge, Jacob Pritchard, Morgan Cloutier, Logan Bennett and Elliot Bennett.
