AMERICUS —
Professor Joanna Watson of Mercer University headlines the fifth in Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) Women's Studies Lecture Series at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Jackson Performance Hall. “The Archaeology of the Goddess” is the lecture title as Watson brings years of research including archaeological work in Crete and Jerusalem to campus.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend this event.
A professor of sociology, Watson has been a member of the Mercer faculty for nearly 40 years. During her time at Mercer, she spent a year in the Mediterranean doing archaeological research. She will bring objects from her field experience for a “show and tell” to illustrate her talk.
Watson holds a bachelor of arts from Washington University double majoring in political science and Spanish. She earned a master of science in political sociology with honors and an ABD (all but dissertatiion) from the University of Edinburgh.

Thirteen graduate from SGTC Law Enforcement Academy
South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) Law Enforcement Academy (LEA) recently held a graduation ceremony for its most recent graduates in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on SGTC’s Americus campus. Thirteen individuals were recognized and received their Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification.

Schley County High School senior class valedictorian Ali Anderson and salutatorian Geena Hollis were honored at the April meeting of the Schley County Family Connection Collaborative.

High school team heading to World Finals
This school year marked the first time that the Sumter County School System has produced an Odyssey of the Mind team in the high school-age category, and the team will travel May 22-25 to East Lansing, Mich., to compete in the World Finals competition. The team, from Americus-Sumter County High School (ASHS) North Campus is made up of ninth-graders Sarah Dye, Thomas Edge, Jacob Pritchard, Morgan Cloutier, Logan Bennett and Elliot Bennett.
