Letters to the Editor - July 26

AMERICUS — The Political Party

Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and liberals in Congress are trying to railroad a socialized medical plan that will put an uncaring and unresponsive bureaucracy between you and your family doctor. he health care bill establishes a Health Benefits Advisory Committee to recommends what is and is not covered. This is the unelected and unaccountable doorway that abortion activists will use to secure taxpayer funded abortion on demand.

The bill makes specific mention of special needs children and end of life care. The federal health bureaucracy will evaluate the cost and quality of care for special needs children. Your doctor will also be required to report on the care provided to your loved ones at the end of their lives. The reporting will be used to “measure both the creation of and adherence to orders for life-sustaining treatment.” (Section 1233)

The only health a bureaucracy is interested in is its own. The value of a human life is reduced to nothing more than a return on investment formula. Money is the life blood of a bureaucracy. When the money flow is threatened, services to your loved ones with special needs or at the end of their lives will suffer.

Congressman Sanford Bishop needs to listen to his constituents and vote to kill this nightmare. He sided with Nancy Pelosi on the Cap and Trade tax bill. Hopefully he won’t betray us again with health care.

Donald E. Cole, chairman

2nd District Georgia Republican Party

Thankful for

community support of blood drive

On June 26, Sumter Regional Hospital sponsored the third annual Firecracker Community Blood Drive. This blood drive attempts to help the summer blood shortage right before the Fourth of July holiday period. Two hundred ten summer heroes signed in and attempted to donate. We collected 186 pints of precious blood. Our donors ranged in age from 16-85. We should be encouraged by those teen-agers who have already accepted a role in service to the community and by those who continue to do so, even in their golden years.

We are also thankful to those community-minded local businesses that donated door prizes: Dill’s Florist, Terri’s Market, Roman Oven, Pat’s Place, Shear Reflections, SRH Auxiliary, Depot Car Wash, The Sheppard House, La Hacienda, The Cutting Edge, Sumter Bank & Trust, Forsyth 1889 Bar & Grill, Margie’s Florist & Nursery, Gladys’ Kitchen, Tuggle Lumber Co. and A Cut Above Salon & Gifts. A drawing was held for the top two prizes. The two NASCAR tickets provided by the American Red Cross were won by Connie Frazier, and the $50 gift certificate provided by Shiver Lumber Co. was won by Mary Ann Crowley.

Thanks to the Americus Times-Recorder for the article about this important blood drive. A special thanks to WISK-WDEC Radio who always help with getting the challenge out to give blood with frequent public service announcements and news bulletins. Thanks again to the community for supporting the American Red Cross blood drives. Mark your calendar for Aug. 21 when we will challenge you again.
