AMERICUS —
We commend the Americus-Sumter County Chamber of Commerce for its successful scarecrow competition and Harvest Festival.
The scarecrow contest resulted in 74 entries ranging from the religious to the whimsical. It was a widely popular undertaking and many people commented on how much fun it was to drive around and view the many scarecrows that had “invaded” Sumter County. We congratulate all the winners and thank every business, organization and individual that participated.
The Chamber’s first Harvest Festival, held Saturday at Lenny’s Market, drew hundreds of people to downtown Americus, and the atmosphere was fall festive what with the perfect weather, autumnal arts and crafts for sale as well as fall garden offerings, down-home food vendors selling boiled peanuts, pecans, apple dumplings and funnel cakes, and all with live entertainment from Thorns Deep as a backdrop. There were plenty of kids activities and educational opportunities.
It was refreshing to see local folks mingling and enjoying the day’s events, visiting with friends and neighbors and celebrating the harvest.
Congratulations to the Chamber for a great event and we hope this becomes an annual highlight in our community: the scarecrow competition and the festival.
