AMERICUS —
Today we honor all the men and women who have served in our armed forces, whether here at home or in foreign lands. We appreciate their sacrifice, their bravery and their willingness to serve in the fight to preserve the many freedoms we enjoy today, freedoms we often take for granted.
Many did not return after their service, having made the ultimate sacrifice. They now lie in watery graves at Pearl Harbor, on the clifts above the channel in France and in the jungles of Asia.
Service to country is one of the most honorable of human undertakings. To commit to serve our country in an effort to repel forces threatening our freedoms is truly commendable.
Today, as our armed forces remain in harm’s way in Iraq and Afghanistan, we say thank you and send our prayers not only for your safe return, but for the safety of the families back home.
For the legions of veterans who have served from now all the way back through World War II, we commend you, we appreciate you and we honor you. Thank you for serving our country and helping to preserve our freedoms.
