AMERICUS — Marion County promoted from within when it hired Mike Swaney as the school’s next football coach.
Swaney came with Bill Montgomery from Westside Macon to be the Eagles’ defensive coordinator. He brings 25 years of experience with him as a position coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
He said he got the urge to see what was out there after the Eagles’ season ended at 7-4, making their first appearance in the state playoffs.
The defense did improve. Marion held Chattahoochee County to 136 yards of total offense as the Panthers led Class 1A in scoring.
Even bigger than that was Westside’s 2008 team in which the Seminoles allowed 30 points in 10 regular-season games. Swaney was the defensive coordinator.
Swaney was the school’s first choice according to principal Glenn Tidwell, and he’s excited about this first in his career, too, as he readies to lead the Eagles.
Expect no drop-off in the program as Swaney knows the kids, and they know his expectations.
Marion has improved in win totals the past four seasons, and many believe it will only get better.
