AMERICUS — Offers suggestion for project name

Recently, the T-R published an article in regard to the Parker Homes project under construction and facing Tripp Street. I finally got the spelling of Rees Park corrected, with the assistance of my friend Sen. George Hooks, after a 25-year effort. Now there is a problem with the incorrectly named Parker Street.

Here is the proof from the City council minutes: March 31, 1890, “Petition of Messrs. Johnson and Callaway and others for the opening of a new street to be known as Park street, running east from Rees Park, was referred to Street Committee.”; April 7, 1890, “Petition of Messrs. Callaway, Harris and others for the opening of a street running north from Felder St. to intersect Park Street ... “; May 19, 1890, “On motion of Ald. Adderton the street running east from Felder Street to Park Street was named Cobb Street [changed to Harris Street May 26, 1890].”

Park Street was an excellent choice as it defined itself and connected Rees Park to Isomville. The latter was an historic black community centered around Trinity A.M.E. Church on the northeast corner of Parker and Tripp, now a former car dealership. As to an appropriate name for the new housing, how about Isom Homes in memory of the former neighborhood?
