Our Opinion: New movie is educational tool

AMERICUS — Although geared specifically to students, the new documentary — “Traveling through Time — From Plains to the White House” — will be of interest to anyone.

Made possible by the Georgia Department of Education, the National Park Service and the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, the movie premiered recently in the auditorium of Plains High School, from which Carter and his wife Rosalynn graduated. The almost full house enjoyed the movie with a moving message from the 39th President of the United States.

The scripting for the entire project is by Annette Wise, education specialist with the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. She did a spectacular job in telling the amazing story of Carter from his early years in Plains to the White House, and beyond.

The scenes portrayed in the movie are exquisite, evoking the natural beauty of South Georgia. Once can almost smell the freshly dug peanuts drying and the earthy aroma of the rich, red soil.

Many local people — friends and family of the Carters — are seen in the movie, which includes several “units” of study dealing with subjects such as Jimmy Carter’s boyhood, his early political years, and his work during his Administration in Washington.

Other partners include Fort Valley State University, the Georgia Department of Transportation and GTA Media Productions.
