Voices- Caroline Adams - Objects to renaming airport

AMERICUS — Objects to renaming airport

I offer my objection to the change of name for Souther Field Airport. Whose idea was this? Why weren’t the local citizens given a heads-up before a vote was taken? What purpose can it serve? I never have heard that Jimmy Carter was an aviation enthusiast or that he promoted our airfield in any way. I believe that Mr. Carter should withdraw from this action. It is historically inappropriate.

Souther Field was named for a great man, and should not be changed for any reason, period. After 92 years, do we just do away with our history? There are many people who feel the way I do and I hope they will speak to the matter. What about those who trained at Souther Field to fly missions in war protecting us; do we forget them, too?

A poll should be taken of residents of the area served by the airport to determine the wishes of the majority, not just special interests. If you feel the name change is unwarranted, inappropriate, or fails to reflect your feelings on the matter, please write a letter or call the mayor. It can be kept as "Souther Field" just as well as being changed, actually more easily, of course. If there is a petition to preserve the name and history of the airport where Charles Lindbergh made his first solo flight, I would like to sign it.
