Our Opinion: Local people care about others

The two letters published below have much in common: local people often open their hearts and pocketbooks to help each other.

The woman whose car caught fire while she was pumping gas was very fortunate indeed during what could have been a tragic conclusion. All the way from the nameless construction worker who came forth to help her move the car away from the gas pumps to the woman lending moral support to the man who used a fire extinguisher — these people may be thought of as guardian angels, which in some ways they are, but we choose to believe they are just regular, every day working folks who stepped up to help someone in need during an emergency. We add our appreciation to the letter writer’s.

In the second letter, Nita Cagle, wife of Georgia’s Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, gives a personal glimpse into the importance of the Mayors Motorcade. She reveals the real gift of giving: that if benefits the giver as well as the recipient.

The thousands of people residing in the mental institutions in Georgia need our extra care and support, especially during the holidays. Many have no family or friends. If not for the Mayors Motorcade, which collects gift items for the residents, Christmas would be just another day.

The people of Americus have long been supportive if this effort, and in spite of the current economic situation, we urge everyone to participate in this Mayors Motorcade tradition again this year. Think of those who can’t help themselves and make them feel loved and remembered.

Think of seeing someone in trouble and being able to step up and help out in some small way. That could make all the difference in the world to someone.
