AMERICUS — To the citizens of Sumter County:
How much more can we pay? What is the County trying to do, run all the poor people out of the county? Is that the goal?
Consolidation for a unified government would allow us to collect an additional 1 percent sales tax which would generate approximately $4 million in revenue, and a unified government would also allow us to collect approximately $600,000 in utility franchise fees. This would be a more fair way of generating revenue that doesn’t just fall on property owners.
As citizens of Sumter County, you need to attend the Sumter County Board of Commissioners meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the commissioners’ meeting room in the Sumter County Courthouse. It’s your county; it’s your money; use your voice. You must attend and speak up now before it’s too late.
If you have questions call me; call your commissioners; call someone and get informed and involved. If you can’t attend because you are working, well, that’s a good excuse, because if you don’t get involved and make your voice heard, you will need the extra income because your taxes are going to jump again.
Thank you.
