Schley falls 69-31 to Turner, face must-wins

ELLAVILLE — Schley County ran into a buzz saw on Saturday as the Wildcats were no match for Turner County.

Lorenzo Lawson scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Schley, but the Rebels left with a 69-31 victory.

“I felt like we played hard; we were just overmatched,” said coach David Kessler. “They’re just a good team and that talented. They had good depth, and we just had a hard time making shots.”

Schley (4-13, 1-8 in 2A-A) was 11 of 43 from the floor in the game. The top five teams on each side in Region 2-A make the tournament, but the Wildcats may be on the outside looking in with games remaining against Wilcox County, Hawkinsville and Webster County.

“Mathematically, we’ve still got a prayer,” said Kessler. “I think we can get two out of the three, but realistically, I don’t know if that would help.”

Friday’s game

Johnny Guinn led three Wildcats in double figures with 18 points, but Schley couldn’t slow down Stewart County’s Aario Johnson.

Johnson scored 23 as the Royal Knights pulled away in the second half for a 66-54 win.

Markendous Thornton scored 13, and Lorenzo Lawson added 12.

“We played well, and we handled their press well, which we didn’t do in our last game in that stretch,” said Kessler. “I think the biggest difference in the game was their 6-5 kid (Johnson) hurt us on the boards a little bit. It was a hard-fought game by both teams.”
