Frey wins first regular season contest as SGTC Lady Jets head basketball coach

ALBANY — South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets head basketball coach James Frey captured his first regular season victory as the head coach of the Lady Jets and his first regular season win as an intercollegiate head coach Friday night when his team overcame Southern Union State Community College 62–50 in a match-up at Darton College in Albany.

“It was a good win,” said Frey after his Lady Jets jumped out to a 26–21 first half lead and rallied in the second half to continue to outscore Southern Union by seven points to secure the 62-50 win and give Frey his first intercollegiate victory at South Georgia Tech and as a head coach.

Frey was named head coach at South Georgia Tech earlier this year and had to rebuild the 2011–2012 GCAA regular season champion Lady Jets team from scratch. Only one player with limited playing time returned from that championship team. He and new assistant coach Taylor Allen put together a squad of young players that performed well on the court against Southern Union State in their season opener.

Nikkei Blackburn, a freshman from Bennettsvlle, S.C., led the team in scoring with 15 points.  She was followed by Delisia Sharpe, a freshman from Norfolk, VA, who added 14 points.  Both Blackburn and Sharpe had eight rebounds each.

Portia McCoy, a sophomore transfer from Loganville, came off the bench to toss in 12 points.  Starters Rosheda Patterson of Bennettsville, S.C., had six points and starter sophomore transfer Shaquaya Daniels of New York, added five points.

Other Lady Jets who contributed points to the 62 total included:  Dekoya Mack with 3, Kadriana Howard, Courtne Washington, and Krysta Woods with two points each, and Delisia Sharpe with one point.

The Lady Jets will be looking to add another win Saturday when they take on West Georgia Technical College in a match-up at Darton College in Albany at 4 p.m.
