Brookstone too much for Marion County in double header sweep

COLUMBUS — The Marion County Eagles and Lady Eagles traveled to Columbus on Friday night to take on the Brookstone Cougars and Lady Cougars in two Region 4-A match-ups. After a tough seven point defeat in the girl’s game, the boys dropped a thrilling game 59-58 to seal the sweep for Brookstone.

A slow first half was the difference in the Lady Eagles opening loss. Marion County was outscored 11-8 in the first period and 16-11 in the second period to fall behind 27-19 at the halftime break. The Lady Eagles came to play in the second half by outscoring Brookstone 23-21 in the third quarter and barely coming up on the short end of the stick in the fourth period 22-21 to give the Lady Cougars the 70-63 region victory.

Chelsy Haynes was named the Lady Eagles player of the game after adding another double-double to her 2012-13 resume. Haynes scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to go wither her one blocked shot and one assist. Junior guard Jada Gardner had a huge night for the Lady Eagles, scoring 18 points to lead Marion County in scoring while pulling down six rebounds of her own. Aiyanna Crumbley added 16 points to her five steals, three assists and two rebounds to finish a tremendous night and round out the Lady Eagles double-digit scorers.

The Eagles would then take the court in what would be a wild game decided by the narrowest of margins. Marion County fell behind early in the first period 17-13 before rallying to win the second period 16-11 and take a 29-28 lead into the halftime break.

Marion County would extend their lead to 41-39 after winning the third period 12-11, but the Eagles would surrender 20 points in the final period while only scoring 17 to fall 59-58 in a heartbreaker.

The loss for the Lady Eagles was the first of the year in Region 4-A play as they fell to 7-5 overall and 5-1 in the region. The boy’s loss dropped their overall record to 7-5 also, with their Region 4-A record falling to 2-3.

Marion County will travel to Dooly County to take on the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats tonight with a chance to not only improve their overall records, but also their Region 4-A records. The Lady Eagles game will begin at 6 p.m., followed immediately by the Eagles game (approximately 7:30 p.m.).
