AMERICUS —
On Tuesday night the Southland Academy Lady Raiders earned another big victory over a region opponent, while the Raiders came up just short in their pursuit of a region victory. Entering the fourth period down by one point, the Lady Raiders made a furious comeback and stormed to a 53-47 win over their region rivals.
The Lady Raiders and Lady Knights of Calvary started the game with very physical play, but also a lot of jitters as the teams traded points on their way to a 9-9 first quarter tie. Two big three-pointers from Calvary’s Brittney Bruce would send the Lady Raiders to the locker room trailing by one point in a game that was still very much up for grabs.
The two teams once again traded baskets in the third period and going into the final period the Lady Raiders still trailed by only one point, 34-33. Unfortunately for the Lady Knights, Southland would not be denied in this contest as they used a full court press to pressure Calvary into turning the ball over in the game’s most crucial moment. Eighth graders Madison McPherson stole four of her five takeaways and Ella Hawkins and junior Taylor Moore hit huge free throws down the stretch to help pull the Lady Raiders to victory. A huge three-pointer by Dallas NeSmith would be the dagger that Southland needed to pull away in the pivotal 53-47 region victory.
Sophomore Ella Hawkins had a huge 31 point night and added six rebounds and seven steals to help send her team to the important win. Kendall Crew also had an excellent game on offense and defense for the Lady Raiders, sinking eight points and pulling down six rebounds.
The Raiders match-up with the Knights would also be a thrilling back-and-fourth affair, but unfortunately for Southland the Knights of Calvary would come out on top in this one. After trading leads throughout the game, Calvary would hold on at the end to claim the two point, 51-49 region victory.
