Schley, Marion dominate All Region 4-A softball team

AMERICUS — In the recently released All Region 4-A Softball team, members of the Schley County Lady Wildcats and Marion County Lady Eagles teams dominated the selections. The two local teams combined to place 14 of the 27 total members on the first and second teams, and the Lady Wildcats also added two players to the honorable mention list.

The Lady Wildcats finished the 2012 season with a very impressive 23-12 record including a trip to the Final Four round of the GHSA State Playoffs. Leading the Lady Wildcats offensively was First Team All-Region selection Madison Bivins. Bivins, the Lady ‘Cats shortstop, hit an incredible .417 in 96 plate appearances this season to help lead the Lady Wildcats to their best playoff finish ever. She hit 11 doubles, two triples and crushed two home runs to help bolster her slugging percentage to a whopping .625 this season. Bivins also stole 12 bases this year in 14 attempts.

Ashton Howell was the only pitcher selected for the All Region First team. Howell finished the year with an 18-11 record and a 3.84 earned run average. Howell pitched nearly every game for the Lady Wildcats, and only surrendered 194 hits to 835 batters faced. She led the Lady Wildcats to the Final Four on the mound, and finished second to only Lauren Rudesheim of Pacelli for Pitcher of the Year in Region 4-A.

Schley County’s biggest power threat, outfielder Haley Collins, was also named to the All Region First Team. Collins hit .387 this year in 106 plate appearances with 11 doubles, four triples, and three home runs. She also racked up 13 stolen bases and a team leading 35 RBIs in her 34 games played. Collins led the team in slugging percentage with a massive .642, and also in total bases with 68.

Third baseman Mackenzie Smith was also named to the All Region First Team  after providing numerous highlight reel plays at the hot corner. Smith put on a defensive show for the Lady ‘Cats in 2012, along with her consistent play at the plate. Smith had a .388 on base percentage and stole 19 bases in 20 attempts, good for second on the team. She was third on the team in RBIs with 17, and runs scored with 37, proving she was a dangerous threat in all phases of the game.

Another dangerous base runner was left fielder Whitney Worth. Worth joined the All Region First Team after hitting .372 in her sophomore season. Worth led the Lady ‘Cats in stolen bases with 23 in 24 attempts, and walks with 22. Worth also led the team in runs scored with 43, and was second in on base percentage with a .504. She also only made five errors in 79 opportunities, which gave her a very impressive fielding percentage of .940.

Lindsey O’Neal, Hannah Conger, and Bethany Phillips were all named to the All-Region Second Team to give the Lady ‘Cats eight total selections. O’Neal and Phillips led the team in fielding percentage with a .970 and a 1.000, respectively. O’Neal had a .303 average with a .404 on base percentage, and Phillips hit .400 with a .440 on base percentage. Conger hit .242 this season and stole 10 bases while also driving in 13 runs for the Lady ‘Cats. Hannah smith was an honorable mention selection after hitting .281 this season with a team leading 12 doubles, and Kendall Holloman was also an honorable mention after providing an anchor at second base for the Lady ‘Cats.

Christina Davis, Kinsley Prevatt, Harley Reddoch, Taylor Hendrix, and Hanna Wodzinski all made the All-Region Second Team after tremendous seasons for the Lady Eagles as well. Davis was the Lady Eagles number one pitcher, and also led the team in hitting with a .388 batting average, 15 extra base hits, three homers, and a .663 slugging percentage. Prevatt led the Lady Eagles with 19 RBIs, and also had 10 extra base hits and a home run to help give her a .494 on base percentage.

Reddoch had a solid year at the plate, posting a .311 average and a .463 on base percentage. She had 15 runs scored and added eight stolen bases to her final season statistics. Hendrix was the Lady Eagles number two pitcher, and she had a great year at the plate also, hitting .324 with a .530 on base percentage with 20 runs scored and 17 RBIs. Wodzinski had 20 runs scored for the Eagles and 10 RBIs to go along with her impressive .476 on base percentage. Receiving an honorable mention for the Lady Eagles was Carly Davis, who scored eight runs and had eight RBIs along with a .466 on base percentage.

In an area loaded with top softball talent these local girls were the best in their region, and an All Region selection is a huge honor. All of the hard work and time that our local players put into excelling at the sport has been noticed, and this honor shows that with hard work and preparation comes success. Many of these ladies will return to their teams next season, so be ready to come out and support your local softball teams in 2013!
