Fort Valley —
A last minute Georgia Southwestern rally wasn't enough for the Blue and Gold as the Lady Hurricanes couldn't overcome a balanced Fort Valley State offensive attack Saturday afternoon, eventually falling to the Wildcats, 60-54.
Junior guard Shaniece Sheffield tallied a career high 14 points on the afternoon for Georgia Southwestern (0-3) and senior forward Briana Walker chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds but a balanced FVSU scoring attack proved to be too much for the cold shooting Hurricanes to overcome.
Fort Valley was led by three double figure scorers on the afternoon. Americus native Jayme Gilbert tallied 12 points for the Wildcats (1-1). In addition, forward Dominique Collier tallied 12 points and eight rebounds while 5'9 forward Carmenonique Dawson accounted for 12 points and five boards.
With five minutes to play in the second half, the Hurricanes rallied to cut a 14 point deficit to five points but late FVSU free throws iced the game for the Wildcats.
Overall, it was a cold shooting night for the Lady 'Canes as they were 17-57 from the field and 2-11 from three. Freshman sensation Jasmine McSwain was limited offensively by the Wildcats but finished with eight points and four rebounds on 1-8 shooting.
The Lady ‘Canes followed the loss with another match-up on Sunday afternoon, and another career night for junior guard Shaniece Sheffield wasn't enough for GSW as the Lady Hurricanes dropped a 61-48 contest to the Albany State Golden Rams, 61-48.
Sheffield continued her strong play leading the Blue and Gold with a career high 15 points. Sophomore Danisha Green tied her career high scoring 13 points on 6-10 shooting.
After a back and forth first half, Albany State used a strong second half performance from April Thomas and a 58-36 rebounding advantage to pull away from Southwestern in the second.
Thomas finished the night with 18 points, 15 coming in the second half, as ASU improved to 1-2 on the season. Forward Keedemya Cooper snagged 14 rebounds for the Golden Rams.
The Lady ‘Canes will return to action on December 11 when they travel to Georgia College to battle the Lady Bobcats in their first Peach Belt Conference match-up of the season. The Lady ‘Canes game with the rival Lady Bobcats will begin at 5:30 p.m.
