AMERICUS —
The Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department 10 and under and 12 and under All Star soccer teams both had a huge District Tournaments recently in Thomasville. The 10 and under team defeated Thomasville 5-2 in the opening round before dominating Crisp County 6-1 to take the District Championship, and the 12 and under team knocked off Worth County 7-1 before beating Grady County 6-4 in the final game to claim their own District Title.
After such an impressive showing in the District Tournament, the 10 and under team and the 12 and under team will travel to Cartersville to compete in the State Playoffs hosted by the Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department. The teams will travel to Bartow County on December 7, and each of their opening round games will begin at 8 p.m.
The tournament will be played in a single elimination format, so the Sumter County Parks and Recreation teams will need to win three games in a row to bring the State Title back to Americus. The 10 and under tournament will be played at the Hamilton Crossing Soccer Complex in Cartersville, and the 12 and under tournament will be held at the old Cass High School soccer field.
In their opening round the 10 and under All Stars will take on the Liberty County All Stars. 10 and under head coach Dr. Bret Law will lead his team into the first round game with a chance to advance to the second round against the winner of the Troup County and Calhoun game at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Should the 10 and under All Stars win their second round game, they will play at 2 p.m. on Saturday against an opponent yet to be determined for the State Title.
The 12 and under team will take on the Wayne County All stars in their opening round to begin the State Playoffs. Wayne County won the District 2 Championship, just as Liberty County did in the 10 and under age group. If 12 and under head coach Paul Richmond and his talented young team can defeat Wayne County in the opening round, they too will face the winner of the Troup County and Calhoun game in the second round. The second round game for the 12 and under age group will begin at 12:30 on Saturday morning, and the Championship game will also be at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Recreation Manager Jeff Fussell said that his Sumter County Parks and Recreation All Star teams have had some great success on the district level, but this will be an opportunity for the teams to put their name on the map at the state level. “We’ve been very successful at the district level, and now we need to take that next step at the State Tournament. We will be competing against programs that play year round, so we know we will have our work cut out for us.”
The 10 and under and 12 and under All Star teams have already had a tremendous year and brought home a District Title, and with a solid performance this weekend they could stake their claim as the best in Georgia.
