Lady Hurricanes drop 8th in a row

AMERICUS — Georgia Southwestern has hit a brick wall.

After dropping its six games at the West Georgia Invitational over the weekend, which included three shutouts and two losses to ranked opponents by three runs combined, the Lady Hurricanes dropped a pair to Rollins on Monday.

“We’re just struggling right now,” said coach Eddie Ward. “In Game 1, we ran into the best pitcher we’ve seen all year, and in the second game, the pitching really hurt us and put us behind the eight ball.”

Lauren Caldwell’s two-run double in the fourth of Game 1 was all Rollins needed in a 3-0 win, and the Lady Tars scored seven runs in the third of Game 2 to help win a 13-4 decision.

GSW (10-17) was held to three hits in the first game while striking out 13 times, and it had five in the second, including two from Megan Wilkinson, who had a triple.

The Lady Hurricanes trailed 13-0 in the fifth of Game 2 before scoring four runs on four hits and an error — which plated two — in the frame.

Christine Roser led Rollins (13-1) going 2-for-4 with four RBI on a grand slam in the third off Jessica Martin.

Caldwell, Kristina Holland and Brittney Pumpelly all had two RBI.

Martin (2-7) tallied one out in the game before leaving after allowing three runs on four hits.

Mariko Nomura (4-8) took the loss in Game 1, allowing three runs on five hits.

GSW travels to Anderson (S.C.) today with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
