AMERICUS — Jimmy Thaxton decided to make some changes to the tennis lineup at the beginning of the week.
Those changes resulted in a boys win and a girls loss on Monday at Brookwood. But on Tuesday, both teams came out victorious against Calvary Christian.
Both No. 1 doubles teams led Southland as Ryan Singley and Sachin Kothari won 6-2, 6-2, and Sara Cathryn Parker and Caylee Hammack won 6-1, 6-1.
Both No. 2 doubles teams won as well, and Bennett Souter won in No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1 for the boys while Madison Whittaker won by default for the girls.
Thaxton said moving Parker, Hammack, Singley and Kothari to doubles would give the teams a better chance at winning at region.
“We’re making an attempt to strengthen our effort at the region tournament,” said Thaxton. “In the past, the points have been divided with just two teams, and this year it might be three. I think we might have a better chance at getting more points than anybody else if we win at doubles rather than make a round or two in singles.”
With the moves, that puts Merritt Tondee and Sally Ouyang in the top two singles slots for girls and Micah Whittaker and Souter in the second and third singles slots for boys.
Thaxton expects Andrew Carroll to win a lot of matches at No. 1 singles.
Southland is back in action this weekend at the Deerfield Round Robin at Darton College.

Buchanan scores low medalist, Raiders finish 3rd in Columbus
COLUMBUS — Southland’s Jay Buchanan and Deerfield’s Hunter Brooks each shot an 80 as the Raiders finished third in their first golf match of the season at Bull Creek in Columbus.
Deerfield won with a 334; Westfield shot a 347; Southland scored a 359; and Calvary Christian had a 431.
For Southland, Mason Law scored an 81; Peter Lee shot an 83; and Brandon Ehrler had a 115.
“I’m not disappointed in the way we started,” said coach Rob Ivey. “This is a jumping off point, and we all know what we need to work on now.
“I feel pretty good about my top three golfers (Buchanan, Lee, Law), and I know Brandon is going to improve. Everybody can play better, and we’re looking for good things out of everyone. We’ll be in the mix before it’s all over with.”
