Whitley scores twice in win at Sherwood Christian

Chris Whitaker

ALBANY — Tatum Whitley scored two goals and that proved to be enough as Southland beat Sherwood Christian 2-1 on Tuesday for its first win of the season.

Whitley broke a scoreless tie at the half with goals in the 50th and 65th minutes. Her first came on an assist from Catilin Reid, and the other on a direct kick from 20 yards out. She kicked from the left side over a wall into the top right corner of the net.

Sherwood scored its goal in the 70th minute.

“It was great teamwork,” said coach Michael Pepito. “We had a lot better ball positions, and we played to the ball. We tried a new formation, and whatever we tried seemed to work. The defense stepped up, and we controlled the ball for a majority of the game.”

Southland (1-2) plays in the Sherwood tournament this weekend. It plays First Presbyterian Christiain at 12:30 p.m. and George Walton at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The Lady Raiders will take on Valwood at 11 a.m. Saturday.
