AMERICUS —
After rushing for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons at Schley County High School, sophomore sensation running back Tra Minter saw his hard work pay off with a great honor recently. Last month, Minter found out that he had been selected to play in the Offense-Defense All-American Showcase, and on December 29 he will travel to Houston, Texas to compete against the best underclassmen in the country.
Minter continued his tremendous young high school career by rushing for more than 1,600 yards for the Wildcats of Schley this season. Minter showed a tremendous mixture of speed, balance, vision, and power in 2012 and his abilities have caught the eye of many prominent programs.
The Offense-Defense Showcase is an All-Star game that features only the best high school players from around the nation that are not yet old enough to play in the televised All-American game. Players are selected for the Offense-Defense Showcase based on their performances at camps during the summer, and participants are selected by the Offense-Defense coaching staff. To be selected to participate in the Offense-Defense Showcase is a huge honor that proves just how much hard work and dedication these young athletes put in.
Minter will play for the Black team in the Offense-Defense Showcase on December 29 at the Houston Texans’ Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. He will join Byron Beard of Texas and Nigel Case of New Jersey as the running backs on the Black team, so Minter should see several carries in the All-Star game. Minter will be able to impress coaches in the Showcase with an opportunity to play in the televised Senior All-American Bowl in two years on the line.
One person that knows just how explosive Minter is on the gridiron is Schley County head football coach Josh Kemp. Kemp was not surprised when he learned of Minter’s selection to the Showcase because of the rare set of skills that Minter possesses. “Tra has all of the tools of a great running back from great vision to great balance. He is as good as I have seen and the way he breaks tackles is amazing.”
Kemp said that Minter has one particular trait that has been a major reason for his early success. “He is a great kid with a great work ethic,” Kemp said. “You are not going to out-work him, and that is what makes him so special.”
