ELLAVILLE —
The Schley County Lady Wildcats basketball program has not had much success in recent years. Over the past three seasons, the Lady Wildcats had only won seven games total. Entering the weekend, Schley County held an impressive 4-3 overall record, and after splitting two Region 4-A contests in Friday and Saturday night, the Lady Wildcats made sure they exited the weekend with a record over .500 at 5-4 on the young 2012-13 season.
On Friday night the Lady Wildcats took on the Brookstone Lady Cougars in Ellaville in a Region 4-A contest. Schley County started the game on a negative note, failing to score any points in the first period while falling behind the Lady Cougars 9-0. The Lady Wildcats came alive in the second period however by scoring 15 points and holding the Lady Cougars to only six to tie the game at 15-15 as the teams entered the half. “We were down 9-0 after the first quarter but fought back and controlled the game from second quarter on,” said Lady ‘Cats head coach Jody Sellars.
Controlling the game is an understatement considering the Lady Wildcats third period performance immediately following the halftime break. Schley County quickly broke the tie with a 10-2 third period run before cruising to the nine point, 33-24 victory.
Trenity Coleman was the leading scorer for the Lady ‘Cats with 17 points followed by Jasmine Miller with six and Chasity Carter with five.
The Lady Wildcats would face a much more difficult opponent in their Saturday night match-up as they traveled to Greenville to take on the Lady Patriots. This game would start out very close, but a strong second half effort from Greenville would put the game far out of reach for the Lady Wildcats as they fell 75-45.
Schley County began the game on fire, taking a 14-8 first period lead over the Lady Patriots. Despite being outscored 19-12 in the second quarter, Schley County entered the halftime break trailing by only one point, 27-26.
The second half would not be so kind to the Lady Wildcats, however, as Greenville came to life and went on a points-scoring tear. The Lady Patriots scored 26 points in the third period and 22 points in the final period while playing much better defense to claim the 75-45 region victory.
Coleman again led the Lady Wildcats with 10 points followed by Carter with eight, Miller and Mackenzie Smith with seven, and Morgan Satterfield with six.
“We started out hot but got away from what was giving us success,” said Sellars. “Turnovers, rebounding and free throws are what lost us the game, but I am still proud of where the girls are.”

Dwight Harris Boys Club promotes active summer time lifestyle
Four years ago, Dwight Harris noticed that many of the area’s local youth were cruising the streets and finding their way into trouble during the summer months between school years. Rather than looking the other way, Harris decided to make a difference by creating a summer time activity for local boys of all ages and races to participate in. In the summer of 2009 he began the Dwight Harris Boys Club of Americus, Inc. as a youth development program to give children a fun activity to keep them off the streets and bridge the local racial gap.
