AMERICUS —
The Americus-Sumter Lady Panthers got defensive over the weekend on the road and in the Panther Den to move to claim two wins in their weekend match-ups against Worth County and Terrell County. After traveling to Sylvester on Friday night to take down Region 1-AAAA foe Worth County 58-12, the Lady Panthers returned home on Saturday night to send the Lady Greenwaves of Terrell back to Dawson with a 68-26 loss.
Americus-Sumter could not have started their weekend any better than they did from the opening tip-off in Sylvester on Friday night. Against their region foes the Lady Panthers totally dominated from the first period when they outscored Worth County 14-2 to start the game. As bad as the first period was for the Lady Rams of Worth, the second period would be even worse as the Lady Panthers went on a 20-0 run to close out the first half with a massive 34-2 lead.
With the starters out in the second half of the game, Americus-Sumter continued to dominate as they outscored Worth County 18-7 in the third period and 6-3 in the final quarter to take the imposing 58-12 region victory.
After claiming the dominate victory on Friday night the Lady Panthers did not let up any the following night as they took on the Terrell County Lady Greenwaves. In the first period, Americus-Sumter jumped out to an early 21-3 lead, and despite being outscored 16-14 in the second period they still took a cozy 35-19 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Lady Panthers would open the second half just as they did the first half by outscoring Terrell 20-2 to stretch their lead to 55-21 going into the final period. Once again, with the starters out the Lady Panthers would keep the pressure on and outscore Terrell 13-5 in the final period to take the 68-26 victory and move to 2-0 on the weekend.
“We played well enough to win big, and we were able to get some other girls some playing time. We needed that to help get us ready for the Region tournament,” said Lady Panther head coach Evelyn Wright.
Americus-Sumter will be on the road in their only game this week as they travel to Cairo tonight to take on the Lady Syrupmakers on Region 1-AAAA action. The girl’s game will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the boy’s game at approximately 7:30.
