ELLAVILLE —
The Schley County Wildcats and Lady Wildcats earned another weekend spit this weekend after taking down the Baker County Bears and Lady Bears on senior day on Saturday in Ellaville. The wins evened the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats weekend records at 1-1 after falling to Brookstone on Friday night, and sent both team’s seniors out of their gym for the last time as winners.
Friday night was a forgettable night for Schley County as the Wildcats followed the Lady Wildcats 56-49 loss to Brookwood with a 85-54 loss to give the Cougars and Lady Cougars the sweep. Sophomore Trenity Coleman had 18 points in the girls game and fellow sophomore Tra Minter had 15 in the boys game, but neither of the standout sophomore’s efforts would be enough to put Schley County over the top as each of their teams fell in the Region 4-A contests.
Despite the tough losses of Friday night, Schley County battled back on Saturday in their final home games to earn two non-region victories and end their weekend on a high note. The Lady ‘Cats used an impressive comeback to claim victory, and they Wildcats would claim victory in a game that never was close to close out their home schedules.
The Lady Wildcats opened the evening up by falling behind Baker County 15-8 in the first period, and 13-12 in the second period to enter the locker room trailing 28-20. Lady Wildcats head coach Jody Sellers would challenge his team during the break, however, and they would answer his challenge with an outstanding second half comeback to claim victory.
The Lady ‘Cats would outscored Baker 17-12 in the third period to enter the final period trailing only 40-37. The last period would also belong the Lady ‘Cats as they went on a 20-14 run to close out the game, and earn the 57-54 victory in their last home game.
Coleman once again led the charge for the Lady Wildcats with 25 points, followed closely by junior Mackenzie Smith with 19 points in the win.
After such a thrilling game in the Saturday opener, the Wildcats took the court against the Bears. This game, however, would not be a nail-bitier as the Wildcats established their dominance with a 15-8 first period run and continued to build on that lead throughout the game.
As the teams entered the locker room for halftime, Schley County held a massive 40-13 advantage after adding a 25-5 second period run to their impressive first period. The Wildcats would not slow down in the second half as they came out of the locker room with a 29-6 third period to stretch their already large lead to to 69-19. A 17-5 run in the fourth period would lengthen their lead even more, and as they final buzzer sounded Schley County seniors began to celebrate their massive 62 point 86-24 win in their last game at home.
Senior Kelsey Solomon finished his home career as the Wildcats leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Minter with 13 and junior guard Matt Corbin with 11. Senior Jonathon Thompson added eight points, and fellow seniors Dexter Mason and Jamal Horne had six and five points, respectively.
The Lady Wildcats and Wildcats will travel to Hawkinsville tonight and Central-Talbotton on Friday night to finish out their seasons on the road. Each girl’s game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boy’s games at approximately 7:30 p.m.
