ELLAVILLE —
The Schley County Wildcats would sandwich two very competitive periods in between two less than stellar periods on Tuesday night against a very tough Region 4-A Hawkinsville High School opponent. Despite a 27 point performance from senior Wildcat Kelsey Solomon, a disastrous first and fourth period would be the difference in the Wildcat’s 87-63 road loss.
The Wildcats knew that knocking off the Hawkinsville Red Devils in their home gym would be a difficult task, and that goal did not get any easier after the Red Devils raced out to a big 23-9 first period lead. Schley County would find their footing in the second period, but the massive opening quarter would give the Red Devils a comfortable 44-29 lead as the teams entered the halftime break.
The third period would also be a back-and-fourth quarter as Schley County went shot for shot with the Red Devils on the way to a 19-19 third quarter score. Unfortunately for Schley County, Hawkinsville would not let up with a big lead in the fourth period, and following a 24-15 Red Devil run in the final quarter, Hawkinsville would claim the 87-63 Region 4-A victory and defend their home gym against a dangerous Wildcat team.
Solomon’s huge 27 point night kept the Wildcats close in the contest, but it would not be enough to put the ‘Cats over the top in the disappointing loss. Solomon was the Wildcats only double-digit scorer, but Jon Thompson and Matt Corbin would each score nine points, followed by Broderick Brooks and Tra Minter with eight points.
The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats of Schley will wrap-up the regular season on Friday night when they travel to Talbotton to take on Central-Talbotton High School in another Region 4-A contest. The girl’s game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boy’s game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
