AMERICUS —
Vincent Cornu had a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds as South Georgia Tech won its sixth game in a row, beating Middle Georgia Tech 93-63 on Wednesday night.
Demario Fountain added 16 points, Khiry White and Morris Mitchell each had 12, and David Wagner scored 10.
“I thought our shooting was a little bit rusty being off, but the biggest thing I’m proud of is after looking back at the numbers and even though it was a 30-point victory, we didn’t get sloppy,” said coach Steven Wright. “We handled our business, took care of home court again, and now we’ll start preparing a little more intensely because every game now is a conference game.”
The Jets (12-2) led 50-30 at the half and held their biggest lead at 85-49. They held a 49-29 (21-9 offensive) edge in rebounds and a 16-2 advantage in second-chance points.
SGTC forced 19 turnovers, converting them into 30 points.
“The guys were pretty focused in last night,” said Wright. “We did what we needed to do like I figured we would. It was a good game.”
It was Cornu’s first game back after a hand injury. Eight of his 10 rebounds were offensive, and his production came in 20 minutes.
“He played well,” said Wright. “When he shot and missed it, he chased it and put it back in. He plays with so much energy. He plays hard. With the layoff and him sitting over there watching, I think it got him furious. He came out with a passion and played strong around the bucket. If he put those numbers up in a 28- to 30-minute game, who knows what he has. Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come.”
Mitchell also had 10 rebounds.
Fountain played 17 minutes, re-injuring the same hip that kept him out earlier in the season. Wright said he will be ready for Saturday when the Jets host Atlanta Metro.
The Lady Jets tip at 2 p.m. with the men to follow.
