Schley drops to 0-2 with loss to Stewart County

LUMPKIN — After losing their season opener to First Presbyterian Day 53-40, the Schley County Wildcats boy’s basketball team fell to 0-2 on the young season with a loss to Stewart County in Lumpkin on Tuesday night. After being outscored 33-16 in the first two periods, the Wildcats battled back and pulled to within nine points in the second half before finally falling to the Royal Knights 65-41.

Despite falling in a disappointing contest, the Wildcats had a positive second half and ended the night with three scorers in double digits. Kelsey Solomon led the Schley County scoring attack with 11 points, and Dexter Mason and Ne’kevious Sims added 10 points apiece.

Schley County coach David Kessler was not happy with the way his team played in the first half, but still encouraged with the progress the ‘Cats made in the final two periods. “We didn’t play well in the first half, but I was pleased with the way we finished the game. We cut the lead back to nine points, but we spent so much energy doing that that the rest of the game kind of got away from us. I was still pleased with the way we fought and finished the game, because it would have been easy to fold tent and quit, but we didn’t.”

Although the Wildcat’s season has gotten off to a rough start, they will have another opportunity to take their first win of the season on Friday when they travel to Columbus to take Region 4-A foe Pacelli. A win over the Vikings could be the first win and first region win for the Wildcats if they can pull it out, and the game will begin at 7:30 p.m.

In the summer of 2009 he began the Dwight Harris Boys Club of Americus, Inc. as a youth development program to give children a fun activity to keep them off the streets and bridge the local racial gap.
