Marion Co. Lady Eagles earn first victory of the season

BUENA VISTA — It did not take long for the Marion County Lady Eagles to get their season on the right track as they defeated Greenville 79-60 on Friday night to kick off their 2012-13 basketball season. The Lady Eagles got off to a strong start on both sides of the ball, and when all was said and done they exited their home gym with the Region 4-A win and a 1-0 record.

Marion County outscored Greenville 35-27 in the first half and kept their foot on the gas in the second half by outscoring Greenville 44-33 to stretch their final lead to 79-60. The big win gave the Eagles a perfect record after having to postpone the beginning of their season due to football playoffs.

Center Chelsy Haynes had a huge first game. scoring 21 points to lead her team to their first victory of the year. Aisha Ansley scored 17 points, and Shanice Crumbley and Shenika Stevens each had 10 points in the big victory.

The Lady Eagles will travel to Schley County to take on the Lady Wildcats  at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11 as they attempt to claim their second straight region victory to open the season.

Wells had seen all he needed to see to make his college choice. Following his senior year at Marion County this season, Wells will don the black and gold as Mountaineer on the Appalachian State football team.
