Darius Harris resigns from the SCPRD

AMERICUS — Darius Harris has resigned from the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department.

Harris resigned Sept. 1, effective immediately, leaving his position as athletic manager open.

Sumter County administrator Lynn Taylor said Harris resigned for personal reasons.

“He was a valued employee, but we respect his personal decision,” she said.

Harris didn’t return an e-mail message or phone call for comment.

SCPRD executive director Tim Estes said he hopes the position can be filled soon.

“I have submitted a request to the human resource manager, so she’ll go before the board to request that position to be filled as soon as they will allow it,” he said. “It’s a vital position we need to fill as soon as possible.”

Harris has been with the department since February 2001, when it was the Americus-Sumter County Parks and Recreation Authority. The authority was taken over by the county on July 1, 2008, changing it to the SCPRD.

Harris was in charge of all youth athletics at the SCPRD. He supervised football, two age groups in basketball, track and helped with baseball. He was also in charge of the summer day camp.

“Darius was instrumental in setting up the track program and seeing it through the last four years,” said Estes. “There’s no question he’s had a positive influence on the young people of Sumter County and will certainly be missed.”

Taylor said Estes’ request can be filed Tuesday morning at the Sumter County Board of Commissioners committee meeting. While the county is in a hiring freeze, it is possible the position could be granted.

“The board evaluates all positions based on the need of the organization, and sometimes, some things are more seasonal than others,” she said. “It’s a critical time for that position with a number of activities going on that he worked with. The final decision would be made the following Tuesday night (Sept. 21) at the regular meeting. With the normal order of things, the board can choose to vote to suspend the rules to take action on the matter if critical.”
