AMERICUS — The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets extended their conference record to 7 – 0 with a 58 – 49 win over the Georgia Perimeter Lady Jaguars Saturday to remain in first place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA). The Lady Jets are 11 – 8 overall on the season. Georgia Perimeter’s Lady Jaguars were also unbeaten in the conference prior to their loss to the Lady Jets.
The SGTC Jets played hard in the second half of the double-header against Georgia Perimeter but dropped their third consecutive conference game in a 85 – 75 loss to the top-ranked Georgia Perimeter Jaguars.
The Lady Jets will be putting their number one standing in the conference on the line again tonight when they travel to Cochran to take on the second place and nationally ranked Middle Georgia College Lady Warriors. That game begins at 5:30 with the men’s team following at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Jets allowed the Georgia Perimeter Lady Jaguars to get on the board first in Saturday’s game but that was the only lead ever enjoyed by Georgia Perimeter. The Lady Jets were up 31 – 23 at the half and stretched that lead to 14 points in the second half before clinching the 58 – 49 victory.
Four Lady Jets were in double-figures in the win over Georgia Perimeter. Shontae McCall, the 6’ 1” sophomore guard from Lynn Haven, Florida, led the Lady Jets with 17 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, four assists and one blocked shot.
She was joined in double-figures by Samantha Phillips, Inna Leja and Shanique Holston.
Phillips, a 5’ 9” sophomore guard from Tallassee, Florida, and Inna Leja, a 5’ 11” sophomore from Ventspils, Latvia, both added 12 points each. Holston, a freshman from Reynolds, Georgia, added 11 points.
The Jets came out in the second game of the night and managed to pull within four points of the Georgia Perimeter College Jaguars in the final minutes of the contest but the Jaguars hit their last minute free throws to win, 85 – 75. The Jaguars remained in first place with a 7 – 0 conference record while South Georgia Tech dropped to eighth place with a 1 – 4 conference record. The Jets are 8 – 9 overall.
Kentavious Clowers, a 6’ 5” freshman forward from Nashville, Georgia, led the Jets in scoring with 23 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Khiry White, a 6’ 1” sophomore guard from Shaw High School in Columbus, Georgia was close behind with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and six steals. Phillip Flowers was the only other Jet in double-figures with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Three Georgia Perimeter Jaguars were also in double figures with James Johnson leading with 25 points. Muhammad Abdul-Aleem was next with 17 points and Shareif Adamu follow7d with 12 points.
The difference in the game was in the points off the bench. Georgia Perimeter’s second string outscored South Georgia Tech 20 – 10 from the bench in the 10-point loss.
Both the Lady Jets and the Jets will play another conference game tonight in Cochran against Middle Georgia. The Lady Jets play at 5:30 and the Jets follow at 7:30.
