South Georgia Tech Lady Jets ranked 12th in nation in defense

AMERICUS — South Georgia Technical College’s Lady Jets moved up five spots this week into 12th place in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) team defensive poll. The Lady Jets have given up an average of 51.826 points per game, which is the 12th best defensive average in the NJCAA.

Monroe Community College is currently the top defensive team in the nation only allowing 42.650 points per game this season. Darton College in Albany is ranked three spots ahead of South Georgia Tech in defense. They have only given up an average of 49.050 points per game to be ranked ninth in the nation. South Georgia Tech defeated Darton earlier in the season and the two teams will face off again in a match-up at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at Americus. The Jets will play Gordon at 7:30 in the second half of the double-header that night.

In addition to the improved team defensive national ranking, South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets sophomore Shontae McCall remained ranked nationally in four different individual categories including individual scoring, assists, steals, and rebounds and freshman Manon Cherubini earned a national ranking for her three-point percentage shooting.

McCall, a 6’1” sophomore from Haney Technical School in Lynn Haven, Fla., is currently ranked 14th in the nation in assists. She dropped two spots from last week’s poll. She has 134 assists in 23 games for an average of 5.826 per game. She is also ranked 48th in the nation in individual scoring. She is currently averaging 16.826 points per game through 23 games.

The other two areas where she is nationally ranked are in rebounds and steals. She is 31st in the nation in rebounding with 225 total rebounds. She has 71 offensive rebounds and 154 defensive rebounds which gives her a combined average of 9.783 per game.

McCall is currently also ranked 49th in the nation in steals with a total of 67 in 23 games for a 2.913 per game average.

Her teammate, Manon Cherubini, a 6’ 0” freshman guard from St. Chamond, France, also made the national rankings this week. She is ranked 41st in the nation in three-point field goal percentage shooting. She has hit 39 percent  of her shots from the three point line this season. She is 35 of 89.

McCall, Cherubini and four of their teammates are also listed in individual categories in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association standings. McCall is the leader in the state in assists with 5.7 per game, ranked third in overall field goal percentage shooting with a 52 percent success rate, the fourth leading scorer in the GCAA, fourth in free throw percentage shooting at 68 percent and seventh in steals.

Manon Cherubini is the leading three-point percentage shooter in the GCAA and Samantha Phillips is close behind in sixth place with a 33 percent success rate behind the three-point line. She is 28 of 86.

Shanique Holston, a 5’ 11” freshman from Taylor County High School in Reynolds, is ranked second in overall field goal percentage shooting with a 53 percent success rate. She is 135 of 256 in field goal shooting. She is also sixth in the GCAA in scoring with an average of 15.7 points per game this season and 14th in the state in rebounding with an average of 7.5 per game.

Kayla Ritchie and Inna Leja are also included in the GCAA individual statistics. Leja is ranked fifth in the state in assists with 4.3 per game and Richie is ranked 8th in the state in assists with 4 per game. Ritchie is also 20th in the state in steals with two per game.

The Lady Jets will return to actionat 5:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in Americus when they host Albany Tech. The Jets will follow at 7:30 p.m. with a rematch against Albany Tech’s Titans.

     In the first Americus-Sumter football action of the 2012 year, the Blue team survived a late charge by the Gold team to earn the victory in the Panthers’ 2012 Spring game. After taking an early 13-0 lead, the Blue team had to sack Gold team quarterback Jonathon Thomas late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 13-6 win and earn bragging rights until next spring.

     Last Tuesday the Schley County Wildcats traveled to Charlton County to take on the Indians in the Class A state quarterfinals. The two teams were the final two public schools left  in the Class A playoffs.

  • J.P. Griffin competed GSW's Griffin secures top 10 finish at Nationals

    He started the tournament with a birdie. He ended the tournament with a birdie. In between, Georgia Southwestern golfer J.P. Griffin continued to play some terrific golf at the three-round, three-day NCAA Division II National Championships. Griffin finished at 4-under par and tied for ninth place in the 108-player field.

  • Reco Dawson Former GSW and SGTC coach Dawson named head coach at Central Georgia Technical College

    Another former Georgia Southwestern assistant basketball coach will be the head coach of another program next fall. Reco Dawson, who was an assistant coach on Mike Leeder’s staff at GSW during the 2011-2012 basketball season, recently accepted the head coaching position at Central Georgia Technical College in Macon, Georgia.

    Local football fans that are foaming at the mouth waiting for August to roll around can get a taste for the upcoming season this Friday night as the Americus-Sumter Panthers will be hosting their annual Blue-Gold spring game. The Panthers, who finished as the Region 1-AAA runner up in 2010 and 2011, will see how their team has progressed through their spring practices and evaluate their positions for the upcoming 2012 season.

    The Region 1-AAA All-Region team was recently announced, and the Americus-Sumter Panthers won numerous awards from the head man all the way down to a freshman. After having an amazing year in which the Panthers finished with a 12-5 record and won the school’s first ever Region Championship in soccer, the Americus-Sumter soccer teams and head coach were recognized for all of their hard work with numerous post season awards.
